Many colleges do not offer bachelor’s degrees that are specific to automotive engineering, so aspiring automotive engineers should consider majoring in mechanical engineering or a related field. Most mechanical engineering programs offer an option to concentrate on automotive engineering. Engineering students at Warwick develop an in-depth understanding of the classical principles of engineering by following a general engineering programme for the first four terms. Thereafter, those specialising in Automotive Engineering will combine a firm grounding in the principles of automotive engineering with experience of cutting-edge technology. Most of our graduates proceed directly to employment in an engineering profession. Typical automotive engineering careers span a wide range of areas, including design, research and development, testing and manufacturing.
Other graduates decide to stay with us and extend their automotive education at postgraduate level. Lee felt the course itself was well rounded, covering all aspects of engineering, with a focus on design, which he enjoyed. Crucial moments of Lee’s studies, from submitting his final year project, to designing a racing car in parallel with his full-time sandwich year job, taught him what is possible with determination, and a deadline. Most of the modules will not require you to read too many articles or books other than the ones you already use in class. However, you will have a lot of assignments that consist of working on a project in a group with other fellow students. There is one LRC on College Lane Campus and another one on de Havilland Campus.
I graduated from high school with a diploma in foreign languages and my knowledge in mathematics has always been average. Nevertheless, my performance in all mathematics and mathematics-related modules in university has been excellent so far. The teaching staff is so good and there is so much support at university, that you can rest assured you will receive the best help you can get if you struggle with studies. We are members of theCDIOInitiative , a worldwide network of academic professionals, industry representatives and engineering leaders who have a passion for engineering education and engineering leadership.
Good grades and a high level of hands-on experience at the undergraduate level are important to landing a job after graduation. Because vehicles today are designed and developed in a virtual world and are basically “computers on wheels,” it is a real advantage to have a strong appreciation of computer science. The School has a reputation for innovation in teaching and learning with most modules delivered through a combination of traditional face to face teaching and distance learning through the university’s StudyNet web based facility. StudyNet allows students to access electronic learning resources, electronic discussion with staff and other students, and, for some modules, submit coursework 24/7 from anywhere in the world!

You will study vehicle structures, engine performance, aerodynamics using wind tunnel testing, materials and manufacturing strategies applicable to mass car production and specialist vehicle development. You will gain skills in commercial engineering software used in the industry, such as CATIA (a computer-aided design package), as well as finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics packages. There is also the opportunity to be involved with the Class 200 Formula Student car, where you will work on developing the previous year’s Formula Student entry. Studies indicate that a substantial part of the modern vehicle’s value comes from intelligent systems, and that these represent most of the current automotive innovation. To facilitate this, the modern automotive engineering process has to handle an increased use of mechatronics.
- The course focuses on vehicle design, taking into account performance, consumer demand, safety and sustainability.
- These professionals must be able to efficiently and effectively read and interpret data to improve vehicle performance and production.
- This BEng Honours degree course will give you the opportunity to design, build and race single-seater race car in the UK Formula Student Competition from your first year onwards.
- Modules listed are indicative, reflecting the information available at the time of publication.
- Internships provide hands-on experience that is typically required by future employers.
The Pit Stop Challenge, completed by first-year undergraduate automotive and motorsport students, is designed to develop teamwork, problem-solving and technical abilities. You can expect to be employed in design, manufacturing or testing in one of the major automotive companies in the UK or internationally. In fact, most Formula One teams have one of our graduates in their design team.
You can use the common rooms to relax with friends, work out in the 24-hour gym or have a drink in our on-campus pub or cafes. Our Learning Resources Centres are open 24/7, which means you can study whenever suits you best. “Trends, technology roadmaps and strategic market analysis of vehicle safety systems in europe”. NVH engineers perform sound and vibration testing to prevent loud cabin noises, detectable vibrations, and/or improve the sound quality while the vehicle is on the road. Aerodynamics engineers will often give guidance to the styling studio so that the shapes they design are aerodynamic, as well as attractive.
During your studies at university, you can be sure that there will always be dedicated support at your disposal. In fact, they may invite you to attend their drop-in session, where they will have a better opportunity to help you. As a student in engineering, you will not be required to read too many articles or books. Do not get me wrong, there will be a lot of work and you will really have to put effort into studying if you want to have good grades. The University of Hertfordshire is committed to welcoming students with a wide range of qualifications and levels of experience.
Getting through afternoon lectures is easy and feels like it happens instantaneously as everyone is excited about the end of the workweek and wants to go out. I go out for a walk with friends, if the weather is nice, and in the evening, we go to a pub and celebrate the end of the workweek. For me, it is all about the balance between university, part-time work, and social life. This is where the creative arts, science and health-related subjects are based. This means you’ll share the campus with future nurses, scientists, artists and more.Tags: automotive, courses, degrees, engineering
