Geographers explore the interactions between them, globally and locally. Analysing and understanding the dynamics of cultures, societies and economies, how they vary between places, and why differences and inequalities exist, inform some of the big issues facing society today. Science and technology studies is concerned with what scientists do, what their role is in our society, the history and culture of science, and the policies and debates that shape our modern scientific and technological world. Economic and social history looks at past events to learn from history and better understand the processes of contemporary or near contemporary society.

We accept GCE and International A levels and the IB Diploma whether you have studied them in the UK or abroad. Most of our students will join us with three principal subjects, but you may have study beyond this which demonstrates your individual talents that will help you with your degree. Compulsory units cover core concepts that you’ll need to understand as part of your degree programme. Some of our courses also offer the opportunity for you to study optional units. These allow you to specialise in particular areas of knowledge that interest you.

BSc Hons Health and Social Care

An overview of the subject areas of Social Anthropology that can be studied as part of the HSPS course. An accredited degree may entitle you to work in a specific profession within the UK, and abroad . You’ll be taught and assessed by a variety of methods and it will vary between units. These methods are designed to promote in-depth learning and understanding of the subject. In your second year you’ll continue a broad-based approach or choose to specialise in specific areas, whether it’s policy, social theory, or justice and conflict. Social Sciences help us understand and contribute to our complex society. Here at Sunderland, our Social Science courses develop skills in critical thinking, communication and teamwork that will help you make a difference in changing society for the better.

Fees & funding

We cannot consider different qualifications in the same subject area. Your application will be considered individually based on the particular combination of qualifications and subjects that you are taking. We prefer the above qualifications to be in a relevant subject and we prefer you to have taken optional units in Sociology and Public Health. The criminal justice system involves a variety of organisations and professionals, e.g. the police, the courts and offender services.

Build on earlier level study of the sociology of culture to inform a critique of the relationship between culture, crisis and civilisation. The way sport can be used to address social issues, some of the problems with this approach, and how these issues can be overcome. Gain a theoretical and practical toolkit for sport development work.

We’re committed to admitting students who have the potential to succeed and benefit from our programmes of study. This may not apply if you have completed all your school qualifications in English. Placement and study abroad opportunities are subject to UK and Scottish Government health and travel advice. You’ll learn by a variety of teaching methods including lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions and through independent study.

We will not require a pass in any separate science practical endorsement for a science A level if you apply for entry in 2022 . The requirements to practice a profession vary from country to country. If you wish to practice your profession outside the United Kingdom, you are advised to confirm that the UK professional qualification you seek is valid in the country in which you are intending to work. As well as being recognised as a higher academic qualification, a number of our degrees are also accredited by professional bodies in the United Kingdom.
